They are made for serious dancers. As such, they are made to fit the foot snug like a girdle and also provide enough flexibility for proper foot movement while performing dance moves. These are great shoes for this purpose and the fit is much snugger than one would expect a "sneaker" to fit. Probably a little strange initially for someone who is buying them for workouts. But much safer than if they fit loosely. This shoe is a huge improvement over the ballet slippers I wore as a child.These shoes are also excellent for my home yoga/stretching exercises and aerobic/cardio workouts, which are done on a concrete floor with about 3/8" of mat. No problems even with exercises that require a lot of jumping around like my Zumba sessions. I find the workouts much easier on my feet than in my previous cross-trainers.
